The transaxles were designed to use the lighter oil.. You run the risk of burning up the bearings in the top of the transaxle because the heavier oil won't sling up to them as easily.. The best oil for these axles is 10W30 synthetic..

The transmission uses 80W90 gear lube.. The transaxle uses 30W engine oil.. I have the same axle in my 1996 DS sparky, it has an electric motor in place of the transmission used on the gassers..

The upper (transmission) uses 80W90, the lower (transaxle) uses 30W engine oil..

Hate to confuse you further but.
Not sure if they did this as a test or what but I have also heard of this reversed. In the service manual I have its 80/90 in both. BUT thats a gas cart. I think maybe the gas ran gear lube and elec used lighter weight. Can anybody else chime in here?

Tom,

In My 1996 CC gas/electric service manual, it shows under the gasser maintenance schedule, 80/90 in the transmission, and 30W engine oil in the axle.. Since the sparkies don't have the F/R transmission, they just use the 30W in the axle..
