G1 refuses to fire up without choke
Hey guys, I've had a G1 for a couple of years now, and it always gone just ok. It has never started without the choke, but when it is warmed up will start without the choke. I have always had to hold the accellerator down for at least 5 seconds before the cart fires up the clutch and moves.
Now the starter turns over but will not start firing the motor. I have replaced the spark plug, with no effect. If I take the whole air filter away, and have the back of the carby open, it fires up and will travel. So I have cleaned out the filter totally, but even when I put the hose back on the back of the carby, it will not fire. If I have full choke the cart will fire up, but of coarse blows smoke. It seems to be straving of fuel, but why start without the filter ? I have been reading many threads on here, and some members have had something close to this, but not exactly. Could it be the fuel pump is failing, but pumps enough when more air is accessable to the carby ? ( obviously I am no mechanic ) the cart is standard, and used for golf, funny enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks so much. Micmac63 |

Re: G1 refuses to fire up without choke
Do a compression check with the throttle wide open, sounds like the crank seals might be worn out. The fuel pump works via pulsations from the crankcase so its also affected by worn seals. You should be able to find many threads on crank seal replacement if that is what is needed.

Re: G1 refuses to fire up without choke
My compression tester turned up today. I have done the test twice, and have a reading of 120psi. and it holds the compression. I have bought the two new seals for the crankcase, which i still intend to put in, could it be that it is something else, or is it telling me the seals are stuffed ?

Re: G1 refuses to fire up without choke
120 psi on compression is awesome, indicating your cylinder and rings are in good shape. Before diving straight into the crankshaft seal replacement it would be a good idea to check your carb adjustment. Set the mixture screws as per your manual and see if it makes a difference, also do the fuel pump check. On my g1 the pilot screw is out 1 turn (this is the starting point, some adjustment can be made for best performance) and the throttle stop screw is in 2 turns. Pull the fuel line off the carb and crank the engine over, the fuel pump should be delivering fuel to the carb.
While you are near the carb have a good look at the throttle shaft where it goes through the carb body, the seals should not be worn and the shaft should not be loose. If air is allowed to leak into the carb through the shaft seals it does not draw fuel into the engine properly. This is most noticable on start up, idle and low speed. Good luck with your trouble shooting. |

Re: G1 refuses to fire up without choke
Thanks Caddy,
Ive taken the carby off, and fuel is actually reaching the carby when I did the fuel pump test, the hose pumped out fuel. Will check the carby out as I take the bulb off the bottom to see if there is a blockage. |

Re: G1 refuses to fire up without choke
Yes rib, the air filter is stock and still fitted. Even when I take it off, no kick.
I have just taken the carby off and cleaned it all up, cleaned out the bowl, checked the needle for rubish, all seals seem good, shaft not loose, placed all back, run fuel from a clean tin, still no kick. The starter turns over fine, but the engine doesnt fire over, just turns the crank. If the fuel pump is delivering fuel, the crankshaft seals should be ok, is that right ? Where to go from here ? anybody, please. |

BTW, now even with the filter off, or choke fully on, it will not fire up !
Im beginning to think a can of fuel and a match is my best tools ....... |
