Smile Battery pack builds: 6V vs 8V vs 12V

There have been some questions about run-time differences between battery packs using different voltage batteries, so I put together a little comparison between 6V, 8V and 12V batteries that are often used to build 48V battery packs. Same applies to building 36V packs using either 6V or 12V batteries.

There are three ways commonly used to build a 48V pack. 8x6V, 6x8V and 4x12V; And there is only one way commonly used to build a 36V pack (6x6V), but the question about using a 3x12V build comes up occasionally.

Whatever the voltage of the pack is, the Amp-Hours are the same as a single battery because they are connected in series, so the run-time ratio and life-span ratio are the same whether the pack voltage is 6V or 600V.

I used the Trojan T-105 battery as the standard to compare packs made up of other Voltage and Amp-Hour Trojan batteries to.

I used the Minutes @ 25A as the basis of comparison, since that is the only rating Trojan publishes for all three voltages (6, 8 & 12) of the golf cart batteries commonly used. (Due to the Peukert Effect, this favors the higher voltage batteries by about 3% to 5% due to their physically smaller cells.)

I also compared the ending State of Charge for the various configurations based on a battery pack made up with T-105 batteries that was discharge to 70% SoC (67.5 AH used) and projected the life expectancy based on an daily discharge to 70% SoC and daily recharge. Specifically, if a Trojan battery is discharged to 70% and recharged daily, its useful life will be about 2044 charge cycles, or about 5.6 years.

Because there are numerous variables not included in the calculations, it would be very generous to say the results are approximate, but the point is to illustrate the trends, which it does.

Looks like a candidate for "lefty...righty" post.

That and some of your excellent step by step trouble-shooting posts, which you can probably type in your sleep by now.
