Default Winch installation options

Current ride (it's used as a hunting buggy):
'07 CC DS IQ 48V
6" Allsports lift -22 inch tires
New Powertron P8000 batteries X 6 (manufactured 24th week of 2013)
Nivel 48V/12V 30A DC converter
ScottyB's DVM

Unexpectedly received a 3K# winch for Christmas and have been reading here and elsewhere about ways to power it. These seem to be the top 3 options and my concerns with each:

1) 16V from 2 batteries - don't want to mess with uneven DofC among batteries and supplying higher voltage to winch
2) Connect to converter - winch draws way more than 30A under load
3) Add 12V auxiliary battery - concerned about extra weight, where to put it and hassle of having to charge this battery separately

Woke up thinking about the following this morning. This is an ATV/UTV winch. It is supposed to be powered by the cranking battery of a ATV/UTV or even a gas GC. That battery would be charged/recharged by an alternator/generator. In my case with an electric GC, I have a 48V/12V converter that could be used to charge/recharge a small 12V battery (the size of an ATV cranking battery) that could in turn, be used to power the winch. This size battery would be easy to mount and would supply proper voltage and amps to the winch. If a device exists to charge/recharge that battery with the 12V from the converter, that would address my concern about uneven DofC on the pack.

So, am I overthinking this? I’ve searched here and elsewhere for a better solution that I can live with but haven’t found it yet. Wide open for other ways to do this.

Default Re: Winch installation options

Best option is to use a separate 12 volt deep cycle marine battery that is mounted in the bag well of the cart , that's what most guys here use , Just simply charge with a standard 12 volt charger, weight is only approx 62ibs , I use a standard ATV heavy duty switch to turn on/off the winch , make sure you use heavy guage wire for the winch , I use a 160 amp/ hr marine batt for all of my accessories radio , lights and winch
Cheers!
