If you take the single pass key out can you put it back in? Or is it self destruct after one use. I would like to take it out when I'm not around so the kids don't go wiz bang crashing all over the hood.

The passkey is only temporarly connected to enable freedom mode, then removed. Once the freedom mode is installed, its peramanent. But, this doesnt stop you from making speed adjustments to any speed you want, IF you have a handheld programmer.
