Default 2 stroke and 4 stroke differences / parts swapping

2 years ago I picked up the gray cart pictured for $200. 1993 4 stroke 295 as it sat with the motor disassembled and a broken rod. Had motor rebuilt at J&M, bought a brand new clutch, starter generator needed rebuilt, did the wheel bearings and put new belts on it. It get used to drive from the garage to the shop at our farm, have taken it camping twice. It doesn't see a lot of hours or miles and is a very handy thing to hop on and run out to the barn/grain bins/etc. We have a small orchard and my parents will use it to pick peaches when they are in season but thats right next to the barn.

The bad part about it is the body has some dents, no top, the lift kit is home made so it doens't ride fantastic, and the seats have been recovered by somebody at home and have been filled with a significantly softer foam then factory and you can feel your butt hit the plywood all the time. Overall I like this cart but some things could be replaced or done better (I probably wouldn't until something NEEDED because it doesn't see that many miles or anything)


Just picked up the red cart last week. The cart as a whole was in the exact same condition as the gray one. Motor in pieces, abandoned in a garage never to be touched again until I bought it. I have $250 in it. However it is a two stroke motor, and i believe it is a 1989 (the last two digits on the tag were 89 but I haven't ran it on the ezgo site yet). It has an aftermarket real lift kit, body has been painted, seats are nice and have had new covers put on them (dont have the little clips for the front but not a big deal), aftermarket steering wheel, nice top with 5 way rear view.

The bad is that the motor is in pieces. I haven't inventoried it exactly but assuming its all there, I would probably have it rebuilt too. One of these is going to stay at the farm to put around and pick fruit, and one will go to my house where I can use it around the yard. I own them both and would prefer the one I use to have a roof (not a big issue since I can take off that roll bar and put one on I'm sure) since the one at the farm will just be used to run back and forth, and the one I use at my house is the only one that will ever be taken anywhere/ camping. Also the previous owner took the larger wheels and tires and put stock ones back on it, so I would get some bigger wheels and tires for it if I kept it. (probably budget, not going to spend $400 on wheels unless I fall in love with it) It does look like the starter is a pain in the *** to get to since the muffler sits on top.

I feel like I did OK on the red cart considering the condition and parts that are already on it. I haven't priced lift kits or roofs but those are things I don't have on the other one. From the reading I've done the bodies can probably be swapped back and forth?

Are the motor mounts the same (could they be pulled and swapped without modification?) I know I would need the axle from the 4 stroke in the 2 stroke cart?

Will the 2 stroke be poorly suited for just running around from building to building short trips? I woudl prefer to keep the 4 stroke for myself for obvious reasons but I dont want to fix the 2 stroke to find out its not suited for people running it at half throttle and stop and go.

I really have nothing against the two stroke but I am afraid I will get all of this work into it and hate it. I don't even mind tinkering with it this winter if I could make a couple bucks if I decided to sell it. Not trying to put more money into it than it is worth. I know they are kinda noisy, I have a friend that told me it wont have any balls compared to my 4 stroke. I'm not dying to have the red body on the gray one either, just an idea. It wont get ran wide open most of the time, and I don't mind mixing gas (i figured I would eliminate oil injection for simplicity).

Maybe the red one is worth more parting it out? I could make some money back and use some parts on my 4 stroke?

Default 2 stroke and 4 stroke differences / parts swapping

I just rebuilt a 3PG two stroke exactly like yours. You can’t just swap a four stroke motor into them because they will have no reverse. The two stroke engine actually runs “backwards” when the cart is in reverse, so there’s no reverse gears built into the rear end.

The two stroke has plenty of power and speed for me...

I know I would have to swap axles, etc. I didn't know if they would bolt up the same or if it requires a lot of fab work or screwing around. I was just curious.
nice cart.

I've never rebuilt a golf cart, not sure I have the patience. Do you have larger tires? How much did you have in the rebuild?

Stock tires on mine. The cart was flooded so the motor was seized when I got it.

I did a new cylinder, piston, and rings, needle bearing, crankshaft seals, new used starter generator, fuel lines, carb, belts, gaskets, choke cable, and driven clutch.

I also replaced the seats, tires, and front nosepiece.

I mix the gas because the oil injection isn’t trustworthy.

I probably have $1000 in it by now with the new clutch and seats. The utility box I had.

I don't need to do much cosmetic work, just need to get the motor back together running. Why do you suggest the oil injection isn't trustworthy? I only ask because I've read opinions all over the board on this forum. Some guys say you need it so you don't foul your plugs because it changes oil injection rate, some guys say you might as well mix it. what ratio are you mixing fuel / oil? thanks

128:1 (1oz/gallon) is recommended. I’m doing 100:1 for a little extra lubrication.

The only warning that your oil injection isn’t working is a seized engine.

I do believe you can bolt the entire 4 stroke under the 2 stroke frame, if that is what you are looking to do. Would also have to swap over all the electronics, maybe but not sure if the throttle rod/ cable may be different

started cleaning up the motor, last night. the guy put the cylinder in the head when he stored it and now its seized. soaking it in diesel to hopefully free it up

it came out after sitting in diesel all day. carb was alot cleaner inside than i expected, just need to get this motor rebuilt

Does anybody have any battery number recommendations for these two strokes? its a very tight fit, and I want to get an interstate if I can. I can get them at a discount through work.Not trying to get a wal mart battery like it had in it.

I have the entire cart powerwashed, just need to get a battery and get all the wiring cleaned up before I set the motor in
