1987 EZGO ingnition coil question

We have a 1987 EZGO cart. We were having an issue where it would run for a little while and then start backfiring and die. I went through everything I could at the time and nothing worked. I did not have access to a coil at the time, so I got one on eBay, but the description did not give years that it was good for. It showed up when I did a search for 87 EZGO coil. So anyway, I asked the seller if it would work on the 87. He responded that it is for 89-92. It looks just like ours except the wires are red and blue instead of Green and Orange. It says it is a replacement for EZ Go Ignition Coil OE #23782-G1. I think this is what is on the 87, but I am not with the cart at this time so I am not positive. Does anyone know if this coil should work or was there a difference in the 89-91 coils?
