Default No Compression

A friend of mine has a 1990 2cycle cart. The cart has no compression. It ran last year but has not ran right this year. His daughter ran it with the hose to the air filter off for a couple of days. Any ideas what might be wrong before we tear it apart? I am sure it will need rings and probably piston just to be safe since the cart was sucking straight dirt. I have some knowledge with two stroke motorcycles, but I have not worked on golf carts that much. Are the cart motors similar to the 2 stroke motorcyles? I assume they have a cylinder that can be removed like a motorcyle. If it needs a crank is that a big deal to fix? If so can someone send me a parts diagram to follow. The local cart dealer wants 800 dollars to repair. Does that seem reasonable. If it is not real tricky we would like to make the repairs.

Default Re: No Compression

The piston and cylinder will most likely be scored and the rings will be trashed. Does it have no compression at all or is it just low? The cylinder does comes off of the crank case. I am not sure if they still carry cranks... but they may since it is a newer model. I would assume a whole top end rebuild is in order as well as a thorough cleaning of your entire intake. You will not know the real damage until you tear it apart though. Does the engine even turn over anymore?

I did a complete top end rebuild on my robin 244 2 winters ago with great success. I took pictures along the way as well. They can be found HERE. My 244 is slightly different since it has an internal starter/alternator but the top end is exactly the same as yours!
