Has anyone welded a hitch receiver to the rear axle?
Or bolted, I guess. Every rear towing kit I see bolts to the rear seat. Well that's some hot garbage right there. I need to be able to winch a stuck cart full of dead hogs out of a mud hole without ripping the rear seat off in the process.
With apologies for the "truck nuts," this ATV photo I found online is what made me think of this. |

Re: Has anyone welded a hitch receiver to the rear axle?
Just a suggestion, but I would not winch a golf car out of the mud by pulling on the rear axle.
You should be able to attach a 2" aluminum angle to the golf cart frame with some 1/2" bolts. This will be under the rear seat foot pan. Then install a large I-bolt in the center of the angle. The I-bolt would be better to connect the winch to than a trailer ball. Good luck with the hog hunting! |

What about using a couple pieces of angle iron or angle aluminum to reenforce the base of the rear step to the frame for extra strength?

If the winch is on the rear axle and it's buried in mud, the winch will be in the mud.
It's doable, but you ay want to use U-bolts to hold it to the axle, since the axle tubes have to come off of the transmission if you ever need to replace anything in there. The better way is to make steel brackets that bolt on inside the frame rails, and weld your hitch receiver to those. |

just like my big boy gmc truck, the golf cart hitch is on a plate mounted between the frame rails. i'd definitely beef up the plate, my hitch is just the hole/pin going into the bumper, but trust me there's steel between the rails |

We have a diesel Club Car Carry All 1500 at the shop that came with a hitch mounted to the rear axle like that from the factory.
I didn't think much of it when I first saw it, but they tow garbage dumpster trailers with it all day long. Since, they haven't managed to rip THAT one off, I'm guessing it's a fairly sturdy design. |

Dundee built a really nice hitch... I plan on something similar for my old beater 1992 DS.
