Default Steering wheel play

Any help would be appreciated.

My steering wheel has probably an 2-3 inches of play where I can move the wheel 2-3 inches and the tires don't move. What is the easiest way to tighten this up? 1995 steering setup.

On my '94 Marathon, the excessive play was due to a VERY worn steering rack rod end. Cheap and relatively easy to replace. Approx. $30 for the part as I recall. Made a HUGE difference in mine.

I just fixed play in my '92 Marathon steering. It was the flex coupling on the bottom of the steering shaft the steering wheel connects to. I replaced the intermediate gear, rack and rod end first and it didn't help at all.

Should be fairly easy to verify where the play is coming from, no? I mean, it's not like you have to GUESS at it. VERY simple steering system.

I know this thread is way old, but I've got the same issue on my 83 Marathon right now. What exactly is a "flex coupling" and where can I buy one? Anyone have any pictures or diagrams? Thanks.
