He did actually use the flat side unit. You can tell by the top where the throttle cable attaches. The round slide the top screws on like a bottle top as opposed to the flat side with odd looking top.

I wish he would have shown checking the ring gap in the cylinder.

The 2 sets I used from VC were good as delivered. I have not tried the after market forged set up as yet.

With all this cam shaft talk it came to me that I have all these Omega parts laying around here. So I put the torque cam into the block and front cover and reached down into the bore and found noticeable play. I then miked up the side cover gasket and found it to be .020. So if I shim the cam to zero play in this manner I still have near .020 end float depending on the compressed thickness of the gasket. But I think this gives me a good starting point to figure what shims I will need.

Playing around with this idea some more yielded the following. A .025 shim is just a little too much. A .020 shim seems to be perfect. So torqued with the gasket I am going to need at least the .025 if not more.

I put the cam in -- torqued the cover -- then measured. It's the only way to get a honest measurement. B&S has there crank end play - minimum of .002 I set mine a .007 and the cam is .010 - only because I didn't have the proper thickness shims to get it smaller. Because the helical cut of the gears the cam thrust is on the outer cover, put the shims on the inside end of the cam.

After following your test the shims were on the flywheel side of the block. I don't want to use multiple shims so I have .020,.025 and.030 measured and marked ready to go. I do realize if I would have just thrown this one together like Vicki was done the net result would have been at least .035 of end play on the cam shaft. I suspect the fine silvery black powder that shows up on my magnetic dipstick comes mostly from the movement of these drive gears.

It also contributes to the cam noise issue.

Measured some more shims on this dull day on the bay. Alas there is no .040 in there. There is a .048 but that is probably too much. I just ordered a second pack of shims to make sure I can get the exact end play desired.
