Many people tighten the wire tie / zip tie too tight and it never allows the throttle plate of the carburetor to close all the way. When you let off the accelerator pedal the ignition get grounded and the ignition spark stops right away. The engine is still spinning down to a stop for a second or two, so the piston and valves are still moving, fuel pump still pumping. If that carb throttle plate is still open a bit, it's still drawing a burnable mix of fuel and air into the engine. The ignition isn't lighting it off, so some of that will probably find it's way through the cylinder and out to the exhaust while unburned. Carbon specks, or anything hot enough will light off that mix in the exhaust rather than in the cylinder - BOOM! Otherwise when you hit the accelerator to go again the hot exhaust gases from fresh combustion will light it off. Most common are the quick stop and go at a stop sign backfires,

So as stated, if you come to a complete stop and a few seconds later the backfire, a small amount of fuel is being ignited by cylinder temperature. However, you have a early cart with im sure the early muffler. Which you then need to look at closely and see if there are any cracks in it. Look good. Look where the head pipe goes into the muffler. They welded it a bunch of different ways, some where just spot welds. You can tell if its leaking sometimes because you can see where the exhaust has come out. Look at the bottom of the muffler too....it can crack down there too. If its a issue, just buy the new muffler, its good. DONT BUY AFTERMARKET, they are junk.

I bought a whole new carb for it. Just cause I'm lazy and dont like to clean stuff.

And just fyi to confuse people even more, my cart was back firing before I cranked the governor up from 15mph to 22mph.

I'm sure you read up on how bad the china aftermarket carbs were before you bought one, right? The real thing retails for $247, so if you didn't pay around that much, you got the china "mokini", not the Yamaha "mikuni". If you haven't installed it yet, send it back. If you have installed it, best of luck, it's your smelly paperweight forever.

But hell, I've put Chinese crap carbs on lots of stuff so I said what the hell I'll give it a whirl for 18 bucks. If it runs like **** then I'll clean up the original.

ok so I never put on the new chinese carb and just tinkered with the stock carb this weekend. Pulled her all apart, she was already very clean inside. Adjusted the butterfly to be completely closed and the idle screw(?) backed out 1 and 1/4 turns. Sucks you gotta take the airbox off each time you want to adjust the carb. oh well.

The crazy loud backfiring has stopped but still lets out a very very small backfire about 3 times in 20 miles. I can also tell its got a little less throttle response, it was a little more DRAG CART before the adjustment, just a little quicker, still same 22mph top speed tho.

So I'm going to run it for a few weeks and see what happens. I'll let you guys know!
