Default Testing motor in cart/ controller out of cart

Im working on reassembling 2008.5 (IQ) 48v precedent...its down to a rolling frame and some electrics...

It has the motor still installed. Whats the proper procedure for testing the motor while bypassing controller/mcor etc. i just want to know if i need to pop in a new motor while im rebuilding. Thanks!

Also, is there a procedure for testing curtis 1510 controller before installing it?

Couple different ways to test it to see if it works, but if it's the Grey can GE motor it's probably pretty close to needing new brushes and the commutator re-cut. Only way to check that is to disassemble it and look.

For testing in the cart: Remove All cables from the motor. Be careful to not twist the motor studs. Use a wrench on the lower nut to hold the stud from spinning.
Check for continuity from post A1 to A2.
Check for continuity from F1 to F2.
Check for NO continuity from any A post to any F post.
Check for NO continuity from any post to the motor case.

To see if it will run. Cart wheels off the ground.
Make 2 10awg jumper wires. Connect A1 to F1. Connect A2 to F2.
Apply 12v Positive to the A1 post. Negative to the A2 post.
The motor should spin. If it does not spin, there is an internal problem and it will need to be removed and disassembled or replaced.

Not easily. It usually needs to be powered up with 48V to test it.
For what it takes to hook it up in the cart, it only takes a few minutes to connect the cables and hook up the harness connectors to try it out.

You should make sure the motor is not shorted to the case before trying the controller. A shorted motor can/will take out the controller immediately.

I assume the motor test you mentioned earlier is all thats needed to do...assuming the wheels turn and there no smoke/sparks it should be good? Or is there something else im looking for as well?

So the motor ran off a 12v. It ran slowly, but i assume thats because of only using 12v car battery, right?

Yes. It will run slower because of the low voltage applied.
If you were to apply a full 48V with no load and no speed control (normally done by the cart controller) the motor can spin fast enough to destroy itself.

As long as the continuity tests are good, then it should be fine. As far as I know the AMD motors have larger brushes that take a lot longer to wear out, so unless that motor has been to the moon and back it should be in decent shape.
