Default Workhorse st350 engine problems?

I bought cart with engine problems which I found was the rod bolts had backed off on one cylinder. When I purchased it, it ran good with an exception that it had a knock, so I tore it down to put a new rod, piston and rings in it. After I got it back together the motor will not rev up. It barely runs over 1500 rpms. It runs, but runs rough at that. I have check my timing twice since I got it back together, adjusted valve at .004 and at .006 to see if it made a difference, but nothing. I have removed the muffler to see if it was restricted, checked fire, cleaned carb. 2 times and nothing changes it. Compression #s are 176 and 173. I have no idea what to do next. After 20+ hours of labor and numerous tech. calls to local dealers I need more help, or I might just burn it and start over! hehe

Hi,
It sounds like one of my deals. When you say you checked the timing did you pull the crank case apart and check the crankshaft and counter balancer timing mark? I know you did but I thought I would ask. Are both sparkplugs fireing and at the same time? Do you think the flywheel key could have come out when you installed the flywheel and its out of iginition time?
When you installed the timing belt was the cam and crank in the right position after instalation of the belt tensioner? Is the carb opening all the way? Is there a restriction in the airfilter?
I know how frustrating it can be and I know you keep saying yea I checked that but its usually something stupid. Youve done an excellent job of trouble shooting so far......dont quit ....

Are you sure you got the timing set correctly? If you aligned the timing marks, THEN added the tensioner, I'll bet you are 1 tooth off on timing...

I have payed close attention to the marks as I put the belt on, but I did notice what you are saying. After I adjusted the tensioner both timing marks look to be as close as possible. I will check it again though. Thanks

Will being one tooth on the timing belt make it not rev up at all? I was just thinking it would be low on power, but still rev up. I don't know just thinking.

the timing being off can cause the valves to open or close too soon. Either could cause the engine to have low power or miss. It will also lead to burned valves.

I think I might have found out what is wrong! I tested the coil and pulsar coil and found that the pulsar coil only ohms to 19.5. I quess I will order one and see. I just don't understand how putting pistons, rings, rod, and gaskets made the pulsar coil go bad! hehe (just my usual luck it guess) hehe
