Default Torque versus Speed Motors Versus Rear Gear Sets

Hey all-

I'm new to the forum having recently picked up a 2002 EZGO TXT cart. I'll spend the winter with my two boys having fun fixing it up to include some performance upgrades.

Has anyone played around with various motors those designed more for torque or speed in combination with various rear end gear ratios? In theory, it seems one could use a higher torque motor (keeping the RPMs down) and achieve higher speeds by switching to a 6:1 or 8:1 gear set. Conversely, it seems many folks simply go with a higher speed motor and drive the stock rear. Are there any good charts or write ups out there that tease these two approaches apart including trade offs in power consumption?

This is a great forum. I've been busy reading lots of really interesting posts to better educate myself. Apologies in advance if there is an existing discussion that addresses my questions.

Thanks much.

I realize I asked a pretty complex question especially when one factors in power requirements. I'm working on a spreadsheet I will share later that factors in torque, RPM considerations, current requirements, etc. In the meantime, I did find a useful speed formula (below).

As described elsewhere, on BGW, torque loss can be calculated off of the tire diameter and rear gear ratios chosen (versus stock) and then can be offset in conjunction with motor/controller choices. Here is the simple speed formula I found:

Motor RPM X Tire Radius (in inches) / Gear Ratio X 168 = Miles per Hour

Not sure this is exactly what you are looking for but I've done a pretty extensive..make that expensive......amount of testing on mine. Perhaps these threads will help you.

D & D motor adn 8:1 gear tests

6:1 gear test

Terry-

Oh you bet, I read your amazing build up and drooled buckets! I've got to go through it one more time.

Where did you end up from a controller standpoint --what model and what is the maximum RPM of your motor? And did you target some sort of mid-point in terms of RPM and thus speed and current draw @ that speed? I duly note your top speed and suspect the current draw is right in line! :)

Many thanks --your posts are immensely helpful!

Thanks Pat! It was a really fun project!

I am running the DCX600 now. I'd buy a DCX 1000 if there was such a thing just in case someone from Alltrax is listening.

The motor is the D&D ES 76-51. Apparently it must be bullet proof 'cause I've certainly tried everything and them some without hurting it inculding drag racing it on a 48 volt parallel pack of 8 - Odysssey 680 12 volt batteries!

I think the max rpm is supposed to be 5500 but I'm not for sure. at my 43 mph top speed the motor is turning 4500 rpm's and 25 mph works out to about 2500 rpm's with my setup so we're plenty save rpm wise even at full throttle. Crusing current draw is pretty hard to pinpoint. It runs around 100ish at 25 mph. Those 2 links that I gave in the earlier post have all the numbers.
