Default 87 Ezgo front roof support

I have an 87 marathon and want to install a windshield. My concern is the roof supports that the windshield mounts to is 41 1/2 wide at the bottom and only 38 3/8" at the top where the bend starts. Should this not be the same width all the way up ?

That is correct, the front roof support is tapered inwards as it goes up, so is a windshield.

I got my "86"-up marathon windshield today and it is not tapered. The windshield mearures 41 3/4" all the way up and with my roof support bracket only 38 3/8" wide at the top its not gonna fit. All I know to do would be cut top center and spread and weld in a spacer?

A TXT uses a spacer on the narrower portion.
