Default Struggling to stay running 2002 295cc robin

I have never had a major issue with my cart except for tracking a lack of spark which was fixed with a new coil.

Last week I took it out and it took a while to start. Then it was having issues running. I basically had to hold the choke for the couple miles I was driving but had no other option. Occasionally it would run fine for a few then revert to dying unless choked. It didnt feel down on power.

Fuel filter is clean, fuel is fresh.

Im leaning towards fuel pump or carb?

Valves were lashed recently.

Any other thoughts? Will compression test wednesday when I get free time.

Clean the carb and see how it does.

Doesn’t take much to goop one up

If the new one is a $20 Amazon job you’re better off cleaning the original one.

The $20 Amazon ones are overpriced by about $20 as they’re not worth the box they’re shipped in.

Nice new set of plugs...that's my bet. If not, possibly a clogged fuel filter.

You said you had a no spark issue ...was that a while ago, or just before this current issue? Having to choke it usually points to a low fuel quantity in the fuel air mixture. Cut out some of the air by choking it and you balance the fuel air mixture and you get ignition. The other cause is inadequate burn of the fuel air mixture. If you don't have strong enough spark, only some of the fuel burns, thus requiring less air. Bad plugs certainly do this, but is it possible your coil is going bad again? Trig123, CP241, and Cartmaster are the guys that might be able to provide more info on what causes these coils to go bad. Ignitors go bad with bad voltage regulators...not sure about coils.
When you replaced your coil, did you put an OEM one on, or Amazon special? I think Trig did a successful experiment with an MCI coil on a Pre-MCI engine. It is my understanding that the MCI coil fires a bit hotter. If the plugs aren't the issue, that might be a solution.

I have used a pre-mci coil on an mci engine and it ran great. I’m sure it would work the other way around also but the mci coil uses a connector that plugs into it as where the pre mci just uses spade connectors.

Only use NGK spark plugs.

Clean the oem carb.

You said valve lash is good? Look at the amount of threads showing above the lock nut on the adjusters. Do all 4 of them have approximately the same amount of threads showing? Or do 2 of them have considerably more threads showing?

Thanks for the great info! Pretty my coil was an amazon special. Ill grt an oem coil. Some of the gas is old but always stablized ethanol free. I just keep topping it off so possibly I need to do a completely fresh tank.

All good advice so far, but my money would be on cleaning the carb and checking valve adjusters first. Under no circumstances fit a cheap carb. CP241 also asked this question.

"You said valve lash is good? Look at the amount of threads showing above the lock nut on the adjusters. Do all 4 of them have approximately the same amount of threads showing? Or do 2 of them (the inner two) have considerably more threads showing?"

This is very common with these engines. Let us know and we can advise further.
