Question melted battery post

Any ideas what would cause a battery post to melt? It's the + terminal of the last (driver's side) battery. I just picked this up used 2008 YDRE and din't notice before I bought. The cart seems sluggish/not getting up to full speed so checked the cables and found solder like melt on top of the battery and the post is loose and threads are stripped. It's possible the battery was overfilled because I see remnats of water spots on top. Thanks in advance.

A loose connection will cause the current to arc and melt the post.

Like Scottyb said. The Superintendent at the golf course I work at decided to reconnect the batteries at the beginning of this season and did not tighten the positive cables on a few carts I'm replacing brand new batteries that I installed at the end of last year... $120.00 for each battery

Thanks for the reply. This is the first time I've owned a cart and am learning a lot thanks to this site. Good news in my case is the guy that sold me the cart is replacing the battery since he's the one apparently responsible for the loose connection. Now I just have to hope it solves the sluggish speed issue.

If you found one, there are often others too. If You are new to the cart I would take the time to inspect all of the connections to the batteries, controller and motor. any loose or bad connection will create heat and havoc.
