Default New 2016 Club Car Precedent I2 HF CHG // Lost 25% battery overnight

Hi !

I am glad I found this forum, looking forward in participating in this community.

I've just purchased a used 2016 Club Car Precedent I2 HF CHG which was stored for the past 10 months. My understanding is the batteries are original 2016 and as per the reputable seller, the test he performed on the batteries showed excellent results (Sorry I do not have the numbers). He even offered me 2 years warranty on them if they die for whatever reason.

I picked up the cart yesterday and battery % was showing 99.9% on the digital battery meter installed on the cart and voltage is showing 50.0V. I took the key out and brought it home. This morning I turn the key on the battery is showing 75%.

Did my batteries really lose 25% overnight or because the batteries have not been used for over 10 months they need a few cycles to adjust ?

Thanks :)

I called the store where I bought it and apparently it could be the digital meter that is showing up the % wrong.

My voltage was 50.0 and apparently this means above 80% charge. Is this accurate ?

Thanks

You are correct to use voltage, not a % meter. Here is a chart for reference.

Id be surprised if 4 yr old batteries coming out of 10 months storage could ever make 2 years of use... I see free batteries in your future

Hey Scottyb, thank you for the chart.

The reading of 99% yesterday was taken right after he unplugged the charged. From what I can see you need to wait 12-24 before taking the reading. In my case after 18 hours it was reading 50.0V and 75%. In your chart 50.0V would be 80%

Knowing that my battery are fairly old, would this means that they currently hold 80% of their original charge ? Is this common for 2016 batteries ?

I may end up next year putting a new set of Trojan..

Thanks for your help...

do yourself a favor, put black tape over that meter and buy a digital volt meter from scottyb's site
i laminated scotty's chart and hung it over my charger when i first got my cart
definitely have those batteries tested before the end of your 2 yr warranty

Will definitely do, I am already browsing his website for parts as I want to upgrade a few things.

Would you consider 50.0V to be fairly normal for 18 hours after a full charge on 2016 batteries ? Does this mean that capacity is about 80% vs 100% when brand new ?

Should I be concerned with batteries with 50.0v full charged for this season (and hopefully next season) before I do upgrade to Trojans ?

Thanks !

Basically, is 50.0V 18 hours after a full charge considered normal for 2016 batteries ? Also, does it means that I have about 80% of original capacity?

Thanks

What brand and model of batteries do you have?
What charger do you have?

State of Charge (SOC) is only based on voltage at rest. There are several factors that cause a battery to lose capacity, and checking the voltage of a resting battery does not tell you that battery's actual capacity.
We need to know what the individual voltage of each battery is approximately 12 hours after a charge.
And then you need to check each battery while Driving the cart to see how far the voltage of each battery is dropping.
Before your next charge, check the water level in each of the batteries. They should have water at least 1/4" above the tops of the plates.
A HIGH water level (near the bottom of the fill tube) can result in a lower "at rest" voltage because it changes the specific gravity of the electrolyte in the battery.
A LOW water level less than 1/4" above the tops of the plates, will usually mean slightly higher at rest voltage, but water that is low enough to expose the plates will mean lower voltage, and can/will result in permanent lost capacity of the battery.

The Brand and model of battery can make a difference.
The Type of charger can make a difference.

The brand is PD+.

I am just worried that it is showing 50.0v after 18 hours. Maybe 50.0 is totally normal for 2016 batteries ?

For batteries that were possibly abused, maybe. For batteries that are well taken care of, no that’s not normal. Well maintained batterieS will still show 50.9v at rest for many years. I have packs of Trojan batteries that are 5 years old that rest at 51.1v.
