Replace rear axle seal

Golf cart description: CC DS, 36 volt, 1984
While attempting to install new brake shoes, I found one brake assembly soaking wet with oil.

I have the exploded view of this axle assembly on my computer along with parts numbers.

It appears that there is a C clip holding the axle in place. I also see a port in the wheel flange allowing a tool to access the clip and remove it.

I have several questions that maybe you could help me with.

If I remove that clip, can I just slide the axle straight out of the housing?
If I slide the axle out of the housing will the inner bearing stay in place?

Also the rear end seems to have a lot of gear noise.

If I were to disassemble the axle and replace the inner bearings would this reduce the noise, and sloppily gear assembly?

no .. it is just the way the older carts sound

it will be good to replace gear oil (90w)

You can do it, take your time and do one side at a time! That way you can use the other side for a reference if needed.

One thing I can tell you is the snap-ring plyers need to be heavy-duty...the cheep light-duty ones will not work! Also they need to be 90 degree or right angle plyers...since the brake shoes are soaked they will need to be replaced...take some pictures and pay attention to the length of the friction material on the leading and following shoes and the self-adjuster. Once the shoes are out of the way it will be easier. Have an oil catcher because oil will run out.

Thanks for the compliment on my 96 48 V cart. I also have 1990 36 V also.

Over the weekend I installed a LED lightbar across the roof of the 48 v cart that I own and one on the maintenance carts. Dundeebarnbuggy I see that you also have a lightbar and I am sure you are pleased with it.

I live in a large RV resort very close to West Palm Beach. We have 52 weeks of summer each and every year.
The property is 40 acres and we are allowed to drive on all town roads.

Some of the residents have golf carts that I care for, but now I have taken over responsibility of maintenance for all of the resort maintenance carts. I loan out both of my carts while I am servicing others. Unfortunately these carts have been driven below the ground and are in extremely bad shape. I do not care for every single cart on the property but I believe I care for around 25 golf carts now.

Lift kits, battery cables, batteries, brakes, lights, and the list goes on.
But I had never taken any of the rear axle apart.
I have removed one axle at this time and it is true what you say about the snap-ring pliers. Tomorrow I will go to Napa and look for a better pair.

What axle is under your '84? Is it a fuji? The reason I ask is that I had one under my 81 and swapped it out for a kawasaki. The fuji [2 piece] made hardly any noise whatsoever. I could really sneak up on someone with it. Gonna try and sell it complete with motor this spring locally to someone who just wants to get his pile running.
