I am ditching the aluminum cover completely.

I would have thought that it would be better to mount it vertically as this would help the airflow to cool it.

I'm sure there is some loss of natural convection this way but I added the optional fan just in case

Anything has to beat putting it in an enclosure with other hot components ! It has built in cooling towers - all it needs is air. You are doing it no favors mounting it in a small box. imho
