Default 1999 EZ-GO 36v.

Does anyone know how much torque improvement I would see with 20x10-12 tires vs 23x10.5-12? Have a 99 EZ-GO 36v with new Trojan batteries. Thinking about swapping to the 20”. It needs a little more torque. Thanks for any help.

Mathematically 20s are 11% over stock
23s are 28% taller than stock.
The torque is effected by the same percentage, so a decrease from 23s to 20s would net you a 17% increase in torque.
17% is significant. Do you already have the tires to try it out? This may not be a big enough boost to justify the expense.
What are the other drive components in the cart? Controller/motor ?

The rest of the cart is stock. It has new Trojan t-105 batteries, Jake lift and 23x10.5-12 tires. I ordered some 20x10-12 tires to see if this helps. The 23" tires show some wear anyway so didn't mind replacing them.

The change in speed is based of the change in the tire's circumference (Pi x Diameter) while the change in torque is based in the tire's radius. (Diameter divided by 2), so the percentage of change is different for speed and torque.

Attached is a list of speed and torque changes relative to a stock height of 18" in 1/2" increments from 17" to 26".

Torque loss for a 23" tire is 21.7% while the loss for a 20" tire is 10.0%, so the torque gain (less loss actually) is 11.7%.

Only if the tires are rubbing.

However, lifting does raise the center of gravity, making a short wheelbase, narrow track vehicle that already has a high center of gravity, even more prone to rollovers.

Last question lol. Would a 350 amp controller help with speed and torque, of just torque?

Just low end torque if it is a series drive. Only ways to increase speed with a series drive is change the final drive ratio (Tire height and/or gears in differential - but you lose torque) or increase the battery pack to 42V or 48V (or higher). 42V is a 16.7% increase in both, while 48V is a 33% increase in both.


If it is a sepex drive (DCS cart) installing an Alltrax XCT48400, or larger, controller will up both speed and torque. After that, increasing battery pack voltage will have same gains as it does on a series drive.
