Solenoid size question
New to community. 2010 CC Precedent, lifted, 600 amp Navitas controller, Madjax On-the-Fly Controller.
I understand that I need to upgrade the solenoid in order to get the most out of the controller upgrade. In shopping around the net, I see various heavy duty solenoids with different amp ratings. What “size” HD solenoid is recommended? Is there a particular brand to look for, or avoid? Thanks for the input. - Sean |

Re: Solenoid size question
You definitely will want a 400 amp solenoid. You need 2 gauge cables, too.

Re: Solenoid size question
So Nolefan.. if i have the LogiSystems 700 amp controller what solenoid should i run .. i have one of those 200 amp Continuous 800 Amp Peaks.. is that correct ? and if i went with a higher rating would there be a performance difference?

Re: Solenoid size question
Generally the HD 400 amp has always done all I needed, but if you are really putting that kind of current through your machine, an Albright SW200 (extreme duty) solenoid is probably more for you.
Just reliability and dependability. |

Re: Solenoid size question
The solenoid or contactor is the on/off switch between the battery pack and the speed controller. The controller regulates amperage flow and solenoid has 2 functions. 1 it is the on/off switch. And 2 it must handle the flow of the called for amperage. So now that we understand the contactor (solenoid) is a bridge between the power source and the power regulator we can see that the only performance benefit from over sizing is possibly enhanced reliability.
With big tires and hills or aftermarket motors we can build a case for a 400a solenoid on a 400a controller. but generally here are the engineer's recommendations: Use 200a solenoid for controllers up to 400a Use 400a solenoid for 500a and up. I hope this helps |

Re: Solenoid size question
Thank you Scotty for simplifying that even more. I have understood the necessity for having the solenoid upgraded to a higher amp thus the bottle neck effect if not. And maybe im missing what has already been answered a million times ...so if you have a 400@mp controller on a stock pds 36v colt running 22in tires..all wires upgraded to 4awg and still run your stock solenoid will you see a performance difference? Is there a restriction at that point that could cause heat problems? Some tell me it's fine no need to change it but if my cart isnt performing to its best ability for what it has upgraded or will cause damage then surely im upgrading. I dont know how I havent figured this answer out after hours upon hours of direct reading on this it has baffled and I just had to ask! Lol bless this forum for saving me from myself running in circles!

Re: Solenoid size question
The stock solenoid is 60 amps. For the 400a controller you need to run a 200a solenoid.

Re: Solenoid size question
Follow up question...... is there a need to upgrade the F/R switch, also?

Re: Solenoid size question
Not on your Sepex cart. The high energy switching is handled by the controller.... It is simply a rocker switch to let the controller know you want Fwd or Rev...
