This is a valid point. The resistor system is at it's best when its "flat out, top speed".

I always looked at the purpose of the speed control system on mine to be for nothing except smoother starting. Once it got going, it was nothing except wide open when I was running it. If the ground was rough, I would run it wide open, then coast, wide open, then coast. That was the way to get max use out of the battery charge, and also keep the heat loss from the coils to a minimum.

But I had difficulty getting my wife to drive it that way. Despite my warnings, she would drive it slow if it suited her. I came home one day and found the forestry department plowing a fire lane around my house. She had driven it slow while looking at pine straw and set the woods on fire. She voluntarily quit driving it after that. :)

I don't think you can get an improved wiper unless you make it yourself. I always thought that the wiper was the limiting factor on mine as long as I ran it wide open.
