Default 36v Medalist wont do anything

I picked up a 94 Medalist 36v cart for $150. I bought 6-6v batteries, made new cables to connect them, connected them to the carts 4 gauge battery terminals- looks like the negative goes to the speed controller and the positive goes to the solenoid.

Nothing works, solenoid doesn't click, sometimes the backup alarm will come on if i put in reverse...sometimes. I have power to and from the key switch, nothing at the ITS.

So I'm thinking i should replace the FNR, speed controller, and solenoid. Probably the ITS too. Oh- and build all new cables.

Am I on the right track?

The same voltage that makes the solenoid click powers up the series drive controller, so you won't have any ITS voltage until you get the solenoid to click.

Here's a schematic with the solenoid activation circuit highlighted.

I've followed the wiring diagram. I had to replace the micro switch at the foot pedal, it was burnt up. I installed the new switch, turned on the key and slowly pushed the accelerator down, as soon as the micro switch opened the resistor on the solenoid popped. What would cause that? Maybe its just old? The resistor is circled in red.

That's not a resistor, it is (was) a diode. It must have been installed backwards.

I cannot tell for sure in the photo.

what does the diode do? Do I really need it?

When the solenoid de-energizes, the collapsing magnetic field around the solenoid coil generates a huge electrical spike that arcs between the contacts of whichever switch that opened to de-energize the solenoid. (Typically, this is the pedal switch, but could be the keyswitch, MS-2 on the F/R or the reed switch.)

The diode shorts the voltage spike back into the solenoid coil where it is dissipated harmlessly, protecting the switch contacts and extending their usable lifespan.

The cart will work without the diode, but the pedal switch won't last as long.

About the same is true for the resistor between the solenoid's large terminals. The cart will work without it, but the solenoid won't last as long.

Thanks! I'll order a couple diodes tonight.
