Default Does my solenoid have to have resistor and diode?

Hi all,
I have a 2000 Club Car DS series. The solenoid is bad. My friendly neighborhood cart dealer sold me a 48 volt solenoid from an ez-go, saying it works the same. I asked the mechanic if I needed a diode and resistor and he seemed surprised the one I had a resistor. He said, no, not really. It will work fine.

Should I be concerned?

Diode keeps the contacts in the solenoid from burning up and the resistor precharges the capacitors in the controller. Both are recomended.

Yes . . Will work with out but it's is similar to a fuse. Electronics don't need fuses but it sure keeps other parts from breaking down

I would recommend using both the diode and the resistor. The resistor keeps the filter capacitors in the controller charged. This prevents the solenoid contacts from arcing when it opens and closes the contacts. The diode prevents a voltage spike that occurs when the magnetic field in the solenoid collapses from entering and possibly damaging the controller. Yes, the cart will operate without either one, but they are cheap insurance for two expensive parts!
