Default Re: Volt meter install on RXV

No. A VFD rectifies 3 phase 60 Hz AC into DC, then uses an inverter to create "fake" AC. My garage VFD converts 240 VAC to a number of voltages output from 0 - 300 Hz. With AC motors, you change the frequency to change the speed. VFD is variable frequency drive. I was just saying the controller is probably similar to the inverter section of a VFD, with out the need for the rectifier, since we are starting with DC.

OOOOOooooooooohhhhhhhhh. Yeah that clears it up..

Thanks for the explanation but way over my head. I just know not to stick a screwdriver in an electric socket

If you fed an AC motor true AC, it will just happily hum. "Fake" AC from an inverter is basically pulses of DC of various amplitude and polarity. The number of pulses determines whether the motor whines or screams. Home-made AC motors are always louder. At 1,200 Hp, you need hearing protection. Some VFDs have aux contactors and go across the line at 60 Hz. Not an option when you're starting with DC.
