Lithium pack estimated range?
I have been planning a build for some time now and I think I have it nailed down. I was just wanting to get opinions on what you think the range of this cart may be. It is a hunting cart and it is pretty hilly where we hunt. Not mountains but hollows and ridges. I know sportcoupe got 42 miles from hills but with 25" tires and no hills. This build is going to take a while and lots of cash so I hope to have it done by October. Thanks guys

Re: Lithium pack estimated range?
It will be very dependent on two things,
How hilly is the terrain and most importantly is you right foot. , other variables are fully inflated tires, make sure your brakes are not dragging, you have low resistance power cables, and big contactors. Anything that creates heat/reduces you battery voltage will reduce your mileage. Obviously if it is flat paved road then you will get the most distance. 40 miles is a good estimate, but as they also say, "your mileage may vary". Also start a build thread with your build and take lots of pictures to document what you have done. It will help others. |

Re: Lithium pack estimated range?
Like I said it's not mountains. Pretty good elevation changes on 2000 acres. I won't be going fast except maybe 30% of the time. If I could get 15 miles of actual range on our property I would be tickled sh*#less. The Ruff and Tuff we have is struggling to go 3 miles and 3 of our e gators won't do 3. Oh yeah. All 2 ga cables from scottyb will be in there.

Re: Lithium pack estimated range?
The motor we discussed is very efficient. Current draw will be about 30-40 amps at top speed based upon the cart's reduced weight. So close calculation could be done based upon a % of max draw (your driving conditions) divided into the capacity of the pack. What do you get?

Re: Lithium pack estimated range?
Ok so worst case is 128ah/40 amps = 3.2 hours x 20 mph = 64 miles!! No that can't be right. I must not be doing the math right.

Quote:
1. The usable capacity of a 128AH Li pack is less than 128AH since you won't be charging to 100% SoC or Discharging to 0% Soc. 2. Worst case is not 40A. Worst case would be 500+A with a SMP48500 controller. You have to use average amp usage. 3. Your average speed will be less than the top speed. Maybe about 18 MPH. If you charge to 90% and discharge to 10%, your usable AH capacity is about 100AH. Starting from a standstill on level ground, your motor will draw several hundred amps from the battery for a few yards and then continue to draw about a hundred or so until you finish accelerating. My guess is that the average amp draw from the battery will be in the 60A range. My guesstimate is: 100AH/60A = 1.67 Hr. 1.67Hr X 18 MPH = 30.06 Miles. Of course, I might be of by 50% or more in either direction. |

Re: Lithium pack estimated range?
The good thing about Lithium is that the usable capacity with a good BMS is far greater than with FLA batteries. You can do what JohnnieB said - 10% to 90% and get 80% of the rated AH capacity. FLA you are limited to about 50% if you want good battery life. How far you can go depends on how fast and other variables but I would expect that you could easily go over 20 miles with a 120AH pack. I figured I could go 24 to 30 miles easily with mine the way we drive it.
