new restoration project

I just took on a new restoration project on an old Yamaha gas cart that I pulled out of a friends backyard. My intention is to give it to my daughter for her 16th birthday. Thank God I hav 5 years to get this done.

I have one huge problem............ I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START!!!!!

If anyone has experience with this and could give me some pointers I would greatly appreciate it.

well sence you have about 5 year. you can start by taking every thing off of the chasis do any repaires you might have there than have it powder coated. then think about the paint wheels seats. the last thing you want to think is the batteries sence you have 5 year. just take your time and dont cut corners

So, tell us about it first off! What is it? What year? If you don't know that, give us the serial # and we'll tell you! Second, post pics.

All I know about this thing is that it is a Yamaha. I will check the serial number and post it later. I guess it was purchased at an auction at Luke Air force base about 8-10 years ago.
I am going to start pulling it apart as soon as the weather cools down out here and it is bareable to spend time in the garage.
It is a gas cart so i want to get engine pulled and take it in to a motorcycle shop down the road to have them check it out to see if the thing will even work. I have been looking online to see about putting a different engine in it but holy mother those things are expensive.

OK this might be a dumb question but where am I going to find the serial number on this thing?

If it is a real early G1, open the body up and check the area where the tops of the rear shocks mount to the frame, the numbers might be stamped into the frame there.

Before you go tearing the buggy apart, it would be best to do some evaluating. Put a battery in it and see what does and doesn't work. If the engine turns over, do a compression test. You need to find out where you are now before you can get to where you want to be.

What GMB said, then I would try to make it run. Make it a good running car before you take it apart.

If the seatfolds forward to acess the engine it is a G2 or G9, or maybe later.
If the whole rear body tilts rearward to open it is a two cycle G1 cart.

I agree, put a battery in it and at least get it to turn over and check compression before you tear into it.
My G2 has never had the head off and still runs like a champ.
keep all of your questions regarding your cart to this thread so us challanged folks don't get confused.
