Default '79 G1 Shock Recommendations?

Hey All, I just purchased a 6" Jakes lift and 22" tires for my '79 G1. Not that I've spent enough money already :) but....what would you recommend for a new set of shocks? (Stock or something else?)

Thanks! Ed

Default Re: '79 G1 Shock Recommendations?

Here's what I experienced with my G1...

I also have the Jakes 6" kit and replaced the stock front shocks with 400ex shocks like some have suggested. This does ride better, but it made the wheels travel "too much" and makes the negative/positive camber issue more exaggerated. When this happens the handling begins to suffer and sometimes can "dart" left and right and become unstable. This suspension was designed to use the stock shocks, and that's what I would recommend. I wouldn't go with anything softer, longer travel, or heavier.

I have since moved on to an atv long travel suspension setup, the limitations of the single a arm were too much for me to overcome.

For normal putting around the yard/trails this type of suspension is fine, as long as you keep it as it was designed.

Excellent information! I'll go with stock shocks. Thanks Slonomo!
