need opinion, not sure what to do
have a g16-gas, there is a very noticeable noise, when I bought the cart, I thought it was just valve adjustment, so I bought it, I have done a lot of over needed manintence work on this cart and don't want to get rid of it, anyway, after doing the valves, to .004 compression stroke tdc. the noise was still there, today I checked for exhaust leak, none;;; it seems that the knocking noise is just below the valves, maybe where the cam is. I don't think its in the crank area. if you heard it you would think valves. my question is, is it somewhat normal to have noise like this, or should I be very careful not to blow it up, anyone with this engine please let me know how yours sounds. thanks'

Re: need opinion, not sure what to do
With a lot of hours they will start to knock the balance shaft, it runs in the side case on the alum with no bearing. There is no good way to fix it. Find a photo or maybe at tntgolf look at the blow up drawings under yami parts....you may be able to locate the shaft with a listening device to verify. Some have tried to machine the case for a bushing but difficult project. Some have taken the shaft out. Otherwise you need a different block and cover. Thicker oil may help a little but likely take power away.
On the other hand that is a knocking noise like piston slap. If you have a ticking noise like valve noise that may not be it. One thing I have found is the gen can be loose on bottom. Now I found the tube under it is loose and have to take it out to weld it. I have a clone in mine it shakes more than the stock engine. It sounds like valvetrain noise. I can hold the gen down by hand and it stops. |

Re: need opinion, not sure what to do
Start with easy things first. Pull the clutch cover off, see if one of the weights Re loose or, one of the rollers are flat spotted.

Re: need opinion, not sure what to do
thanks for all replies, Mike you said to check if the rollers in clutch were flat spot, I really don't understand, I have taken the cover off, all weights are lubed and free, but when open I did notice a flat spot on all the rollers, what is that for, I can see how the clutch works but cant really understand what the rollers are for,it seems they could just hit there without the rollers????????, the other thought about the shaft in the casing just below the valves, now that is where the sound seems to come from, can you explain a little more, I thought there would be a cam chain, and that was the prob, anyway what is in that side cover that will rattle like this, once I understand I will open it up an look.. thanks all

Re: need opinion, not sure what to do
I did go to tnt and looked at the pictures, are you talking about the part called the weight, it sits next to the crank, and looks like it just has 2 wings on it, if you take it completely out will the engine shake?? then again what a gob to take it out, might just add a little lucas oil treatment,,,,

Re: need opinion, not sure what to do
Fish, a number of things. The rollers have to be round, flat spots mean they are worn out of tolerance. Could be making the sound. If you can remove the clutch, then run the motor to see if it makes the sound. Somewhere on this site there are pictures of the motor with the side cover off. Another thing to check, is there is a bracket that the air cleaner is bolted to and welded to the starter bracket, the weld is poor, and breaks at the weld. Then makes a hell of a sound!

Re: need opinion, not sure what to do
mike, I am real sure the rattling noise is coming from the engine, will check that bracket, when I had the cover off the clutch, I did notice a perfect flat on all3 rollers, but I don't hear any noise there, just what does the rollers rub on? I see the price of the rollers,,,,,,,, if I still worked at a machine shop I could make 3 in about 15min'''''''''if it is in the engine I think its STPtime.. thanks

Re: need opinion, not sure what to do
Splash system, doesn't work well with thick oil. Roller kit as about $55. And motor may need attending to, like Sho said. Doing nothing will cost more later, so...
