Steering wheel removal

So I've read its very difficult to remove the steering wheel on older DS model carts. I wanted to rebuild my steering column but didn't want to break the steering wheel to remove it. I used a simple 3 jaw puller I had with a little PB blaster and rubber hammer. The key is to tighten bolt to initially set pressure and lightly tap the underside of the wheel, tighten bolt, tap wheel and repeat. Eventually it will come off. If you don't have a puller you can rent for free from Autozone or other big name parts stores.

I agree with the puller method. After trying other methods mentioned here including pushing with legs from behind while tapping on the steering shaft at the center of the wheel (with no luck) I borrowed a friends 2 jaw puller. It was a little difficult to keep it straight while tightening but eventually the steering wheel popped. It was loud and the puller went flying. At first I thought I broke the puller but then was relieved to see it was the steering wheel that came loose.

I did not have a puller to use when I replaced the steering wheel on my DS. I had a pair of vise grips that are lie a c- clamp. Put one jaw on back steering wheel edge and other jaw on nut on steering shaft. put it on as tight as I could get. Hit wheel hub with rubber mallet once and it popped right off.

here's a simple one i use all the time..2''x1/4x16 flat stock with a hole drilled through it big enough for a puller bolt or a 3/4 bolt. the steering wheels are flexible to put the flat stock through it.center the hole over the shaft,put the nut under flat stock bolt through,tighten down,doesn't need a lot give it a gentle tap,pop it goes,i timed it last week less than 3 min once you get the piece drilled

here's a couple of pics just to show.the nut would be tight against stock,ive done ez go ds.precedent and a few yammies.you have to remember steering colums have bushings in them just held by plastic if you hit it to hard your out of luck
