Thanks! The demolition phase of our old house project has taken a lot longer than we expected. I think we’re a weekend or two from getting that done. Hopefully, that will give me some garage time to get this project going again!

Good news! The Utilicar project has officially started again! We have been consumed with a major house restoration project for the last year, so the Harley kept getting pushed to the side. We have reached a stopping point in the house project for a few months while our subcontractors redo the electric, plumbing, and HVAC, so now seemed like a great time to get this cart going again

My brother came in for Thanksgiving, so I talked him into giving me a hand this weekend. Today, we were able to re-wire most of the dash. We installed a new ignition switch and ran new wires to the horn, lights, and fuel gauge. We also ran new wires to the stop light switch and tail light. Then, we cut the battery box loose from the frame because the previous owner had cobbled together a mount for a lawn tractor battery using some angle iron. We repositioned the box and welded it to the frame. After that, we installed a new master cylinder and new hard/flex lines. We also removed the brake drums, wheel cylinders, and backing plates. Finally, we degreased all of the parts and got them ready for installation in the morning.

Check out some pics!

Here’s the battery box after we got it welded back in its proper position. It used to have a little bar stock on both ends to stiffen things up. I still need to get that welded back on.

More progress was made on Sunday! We finished rebuilding the brakes, got the hub seals installed, got the hubs installed, and bled out the brakes. We also got a new carb installed, oil bath air cleaner filled with fresh oil, and battery installed. Unfortunately, when I turned the key on and depressed the go pedal, all I got was chatter from the solenoid and a slow turn from the starter motor. The battery had plenty of juice, so that wasn’t the issue. The solenoid and forward/reverse switch look really crusty, so that could certainly be the problem. I ordered a new overload circuit breaker and solenoid from Vintage Golf Cart Parts yesterday. I also purchased a good, used forward/reverse switch on eBay. I’ll get those new parts installed this weekend and then see what happens!

Stay tuned! In the meantime, here are some more pics!
