Daly 48v 500amp BMS?
Daly now makes a 48v 500amp BMS. Would this not be suitable to run a lithium conversion without the need for external relays? The only thing i can think of is the carts relay may open it up to too quick to a lot of amps and shocking the bms. Maybe a precharger is needed? What other disadvantages might this bms have other than the price tag?

As well I wondered if you could install 48v of solar panels on the roof to maintain the charge with this BMS and a 48v solar charger to manage it without the solenoid.

48V of Solar Panels won't fit on a Golf Cart roof.

I have seen a bunch of carts with solar panels on the roof! They use electronics to boost the voltage high enough to charge the 48V pack. I don't like this option and I would not use it myself but a bunch of folks here have them. My reasons for not using are simple: I don't store my cart in the sun but in a garage. The charging current is not that significant when compared with the run current so it would only increase my range a small percentage. It's an expense and complication that I don't need.

For the best performance out of your Lithium Battery pack it is best not to run the discharge current through your BMS. Use a fuse like a ANN400 to protect the battery in a overcurrent condition. Use the BMS to protect during charging to prevent overvoltage. The discharge path is still wired in to the safety disconnect so it will protect all of the other functions like undervoltage, overtemperatures and under temperatures. Another advantage is that you won't need a expensive BMS. A 100A BMS will do. For information on how to wire it up look for a Leaf Battery wiring diagram.

In general, folks seem to apply a derating of 50+% to the Chinese bms as a safety margin.

Mainly because of cost, there’s very little price difference between a 100A and 200A “Chinese” BMS’s. Although in general the Chinese like to exaggerate the ratings.
I have a 200A Chinese BMS on a 4s 12v battery that runs a 2400W (200A draw from battery) inverter that doesn’t have a problem. I would use the same BMS if I was building a battery that is only required to supply 100A. If the cells are only rated at 100A I would limit the max current to 100A in the BMS’s configuration parameters. Cheers Pat. |
