G16 quits after engine warms up
I have a 1996 Yamaha G16A that has developed a problem. It starts fine and runs for several minutes then it just shuts down. The starter is working but the engine doesn't want to fire after it gets warms. I got a tune up kit and changed the air filter, fuel filter and spark plug. I checked the fuel pump and it is pumping fine. I took the carb off and sprayed it out. Then checked the carb bowl and it is filling up. I pulled the spark plug out and it is wet with fuel. When I ground it to the case there is no fire. Any ides? Could it be the coil cutting out when it gets hot? Or the igniter? I would appreciate some advice.

Change the plug and test for spark. NGK's are notorious for fowling out one time and then no good after that. If you still have no spark, I would check the coil and two connections to the coil.

Re: G16 quits after engine warms up
Hey, read my thread linked here --> link
I also have a 96 G16 and recently ran into something similar. Ignition/Spark tester was a cheap way to troubleshoot the ignition. Good Luck! |

Re: G16 quits after engine warms up
I agree with Spriddle, once a spark plug is fouled, change it and I don't beleive the theory of "cleaning them". A quick test, check the wire harness connection (blue and black wires) at the front of the engine, make shure it didn't get pulled apart. Next, behind the black plastic cover (to the right of the battery) unplug the "engine stop relay" (little blue colored 1" x 1" cube" next to the solenoid) if it runs...bad engine stop relay, but could be faulty wireing to the relay and back to the TCI. If it doesn't run..could be the TCI Good luck on your testing.

Re: G16 quits after engine warms up
Thanks for the advice Spriddle, Back9 and Smallblock. I tested the engine cold and had a strong spark. I tested the engine stop relay and it seemed to be working. Then I ran the cart until it got hot and it started cutting out. Then it stopped all together. I checked it again and then there was no spark with or without the engine stop relay connected. So it seems like it's a similar situation to Back9. I will order the TCI module and let you know how it turns out.

Re: G16 quits after engine warms up
Just wanted to report back on the G16 issue. I installed the new TCI today and ran the cart for an extened period of time and it never cut out. So, I believe that was the problem. Thank you for the advice.
