Clutch Cover "Pinging" Under Acceleration
When I first got my car, it had a strange metallic, almost bell like noise under acceleration. It turned out to be the clutch cover.
On the clutch, there are three pairs of "arms" that hold the rollers. One of the arms in each pair are threaded for the screws that hold the cover. It was the three (or one of the three) that aren't threaded which I figured were allowing this noise. I padded the top of each with some self adhesive rubbery padding, and the noise was gone. Well, it's back and I was trying to think up a more permanent solution. Any thoughts? |

Matt, I bet the screw is twisted off on the third hole. And you need to correct the problems with the clutch, can't mask them.

Re: Clutch Cover "Pinging" Under Acceleration
Thanks Mike. When I first got the cart...I did what's written above and the noise was gone. At the time, there were some minor marks on the inside of the cover where the bolts aren't. I assumed the cover was slightly distorted and was vibrating against the "arms" where there are no bolts.
I know all three of the cover attaching bolts are fine. They threaded in and tightened without trouble. |

Re: Clutch Cover "Pinging" Under Acceleration
Been a while since I've seen one of those clutches inside. But there is something wrong, and its gonna get worse. Put up pictures or something on here. Need to fix the problem. People on here will help!

Re: Clutch Cover "Pinging" Under Acceleration
Here's a pic...perhaps worthless. It seems to run fine...it was just that funky noise. I suppose a better way to describe it would be when a muffler or catalytic convertor heat shield is loose.

Re: Clutch Cover "Pinging" Under Acceleration
Did we already talk about changing any rollers that are flat sided? ( I'd change all 3 if you find one). Cartpartplus, vender on here, around $60. for set.
The inside could be cleaner, then only one pump of grease in the zirk. The belt is not ridding at the top of the clutches, so your leaving some top speed (and bottom end) on the table. Which means the clutches are not healthy. Need to search and read up on clutch maint. The noise could be the air cleaner/generator bracket on top of the motor under the air cleaner housing. That bracket is just tacked on, (not welded very good). Or that was the case on a G22 I did a year ago. Had to weld it back on the generator bracket. This tid bit of wisdom is from "Smallblock"!! (And, yes, he was right again!!) |

Re: Clutch Cover "Pinging" Under Acceleration
Thanks Mike...I will read up on that and look at the rollers. (I've only had the car for a couple months and I'm betting the country didn't fix something until it broke.)
