G16 Governor Questions
Hi all
I just installed a Plowman's Performance Kit on my cart. If I understand correctly, the spring in the secondary clutch (mine is red) only changes engine speed at a given load-is this right? The new clutch spring has increased RPM's at lower loads, giving it more power (fun "squirting" out of corners, a little louder due to RPM's, but I'll take the trade-off). Changing springs has no effect on top speed, does it? Also, I've zip-tied the governor and throttle as I want to be able to utilize the governor when guests ride the cart by cutting the zip-tie. Frankly, I also don't want it to blow up if I over-rev it too! If I bend the end of the governor shaft where it meets the throttle cable, simulating that the two are closer together, will that give me a little more RPM's without stressing anything? The cart has stock 8" wheels and does just over 20mph-any idea what RPM's that equates to? What is the highest engine speed this cart can handle reliably all day long? Jim |

Re: G16 Governor Questions
I changed the governor spring and mine went from 21MPH to 29MPH stock 8" wheels.

Re: G16 Governor Questions
Thanks for your reply. The sticker on the side of the engine says max RPM at load is 2400, the manual says top speed is 15mph. I had to take my shoes off to count this high, but that equates to 3200rpm at 20 mph, 4000 at 25mph, 4800 at 30mph I'm either idling or I have my foot to the floor. Has anyone run stock gearing and tires in a G16a at 30mph (4800rpm) for years without trouble? I know boats, cycles, etc. can handle these R's. The engine bore is big time over square, so it seems possible.

Re: G16 Governor Questions
After reading some of the archives, I just ordered a Speed Spring. Thanks for the suggestion, 97blue16.

Cartsplus.com. Far as I know, they're the only ones that make them.

Re: G16 Governor Questions
your welcome junior1954 make sure your bushing for the throttle cable going back there doesn't fall off when you take the spring off, its very small.

Re: G16 Governor Questions
Installed the Speed Spring today. Cranked the 10mm governor nut all the way down and got 25-26mph on GPS. I know I'd get more speed by bypassing the governor, but I like the fact that it's a rev limiter and allows me to slow the cart down if I choose. With the Plowman's Power Kit, this thing really pulls hills. I figure 25mph is about 4000rpm, which I don't think will stress the engine. The speed limit in the community where I use it is 25, so I'll be able to keep up with traffic.

Re: G16 Governor Questions
Just a p.s. on the installation. I broke two bushings trying to push the spring and bracket back on the governor shaft. I was the monkey, the spring was the football. Make sure you loosen the 10mm nut on the adjustment shaft (spring tension) so you can slide the spring out of the adjustment shaft and remove ALL tension on the spring. You don't have to take the nut all the way off-you can "sneak" the end of the spring back into the adjuster while reassembling. If you don't, you'll be fighting the spring's tension-I lost.
Carts Plus sent the replacement parts at a very reasonable price-I highly recommend them. |
