G14 Sputtering.
Hey Guys,
Put new rings in the engine of my G14 a few weeks ago. Has been running great, but had a slight stumble right after the rebuild. Put in a new spark plug, and even a fresh tank of gas, no change. It's been getting worse, and today it was quite noticeable. You press on the gas and it will sputter and backfire (probably into the intake) and takes a while to build up speed. Have to choke it a bit to get it to smooth out. Seems like a carb problem, maybe running lean? The throttle shaft has a little play in it, but no more than before when it was running better. I have not pulled the carb apart, I might start with that, what do you guys think? |

Re: G14 Sputtering.
Ok, the airbox checked out, everything was sealed up tight. Pulled the carb apart, cleaned it, (it wasn't too bad) and reinstalled it. It totally ran better, way better.
But, after about ten minutes, it started to sputter again, just not as bad. So, I'm thinking the fuel pump needs a cleaning too. This weekend I will pull the fuel pump and carb apart again and clean them both. Might change the fuel filter while I'm at it. Thanks for the tips guys, it was definitely a fuel problem. R. |

Re: G14 Sputtering.
Since your doing that, change the fuel lines too!! That way you'll be sure to start with fresh gas and no debris..

Re: G14 Sputtering.
Well, I changed the filter, cleaned the carb and fuel pump (fuel pump was immaculate), and blew out the lines. It's running great again so I guess we will see what happens. It started to rain, so we will have to go for a good run tomorrow.

Re: G14 Sputtering.
Happy to report after quite a bit of use over the last few days, the engine is running flawlessly. Only have to choke it for two seconds if its been sitting overnight, then not at all the rest of the day.
I've been my own mechanic for over 20 years and this is the first time I have had a fuel filter put crap in a carb. Usually they plug up, but this one flows freely. I suspect the previous owner had the cart sitting for a while, and varnish built up in the filter. Then it started to work its way loose and mess up the carb. once I started using it. |
