Marathon 2 Stroker Backfires during Decelaration
Well I put all the hardware back on the gonenor and readjusted it. Well while doing this I noticed the engine, which is running like a scalded dog, backfires when I let off the gas, just about when its about at idle speed. It had old gas in it, ran most of it out and topped it off with some fresh stuff with Stabil in it.

Re: Marathon 2 Stroker Backfires during Decelaration
Do you have the spring in place on your throttle cable, if not that could be your problem. There is supposed to be a small (1/2" or so ) spring that goes over the cable between the carb arm and the cable stop (this ensures the butterfly closes securely and completely during deccel) - if it's not there, replace it, the main symptom of it not being there is exactly what you are describing.

I'm not sure, can you post a picture. I don't see a spring on the accelerator cable. But the linkage seems to spring back when you let off the pedal.

Re: Marathon 2 Stroker Backfires during Decelaration
I'll snap a pic in the AM and post it - it's a small spring (almost like the spring from a pen) that goes between the carb arm (which also has it's own spring, that's why it springs back) and the cable stop - it's very common for people to lose them or figure that they don't do anything and remove them, but they DO serve an important purpose, as you're currently experiencing, more than likely. I'll shoot a pic in the AM for you

Re: Marathon 2 Stroker Backfires during Decelaration
There's no spring between the cable stop and the carb lever, I guess the other owner thought he didn't need it. But the picture will show me what I need to get, Thanks for the help,Oh I set up the governor, centered up the lever to the driven clutch, then if you look the manual it says to set the cable at the carb at 1 3/4" . I did that and it done nothing, in order to keep the cart at about 12mph its set at about 1" .

That spring should be fully compressed when you are off the throttle. |

Thanks, GTM (I slept in a bit this AM) ... Another point of note, when you replace the spring you'll have to recalibrate your governor (in fact, the spring is essential to correct operation of the governor). Fix (well, replace anyway) that spring and I'd be willing to bet your troubles stop!

BCM - Yep, you will be able to almost crawl once you have the spring on and the backfiring should be gone.

Re: Marathon 2 Stroker Backfires during Decelaration
Put on a spring this morning and guess what?? No more backfiring! Thanks for the all
help guys, I'm fixing this cart up for a friend, her son got it for nothing. So far all I had to do was replace the starter, clean the carb and reinstall the governor. I need to find a roof and I want to change the rear end gear lub. I'll probably p/u a roof this winter down in Florida, theres a bunch of guys down there that tinker with these things. |
