Unhappy Reverse problem

Sometimes, when I switch to reverse and hit the pedal nothing happens. I will then hold the pedal down and then the starter spins and we are off.

Any ideas/suggestions. Oh yeah, it is on my 1982 Marathon smoker

Mostly happens after we have been mobile for awhile.

It's been a LONG time since I have seen the two stroke. But the motor spins in reverse for reverse. You must have a bad connection or a bad micro switch for the reverse?

I had the same problem on my 89 and I removed the reversing switch and disassembled and cleaned it. I also had a Battery ground issue that was causing me some grief , I added a new ground from the battery to the frame and one frome the battery to the engine.

I will investigate the switches and all connections and grounds. She's old, she runs good but this winter she's getting a paint job and an upper end overhaul. How much oversized can a guy go on these oldsters. +.10, .20,.30

Depends what you can find for a piston & Rings, I revived mine from the dead by getting a stock size piston and rings off e-bay and just a light hone with a sunnen rod machine ( just happend to have the correct mandrel) , I have since purchased a complete engine overhaul kit with a new crank, rod, bearings, rings, gaskets, piston and jug off e-bay and it all looks good, I am going to rebuild mine this winter as I think the crank bearings are getting tired .

They have standard... .25mm oversize and .50mm oversize
A top end kit cost about 250. comes with a new cylinder, piston, rings, wrist pins, clips and gaskets. All you would need is the upper rod bearing for a new top end.
