Re: 86 2cycle ezgo!!!!!
This is an '85, but should be the same. Sounds like a fuel problem though!

Re: 86 2cycle ezgo!!!!!
When is it backfiring? At full speed or after you let off the gas? If it’s when you let off and are still coasting, the backfiring could be due to carburetor cable adjustment or throttle plate not fully closing, allowing excess fuel to enter the engine. You might also check for dirt in the needle and seat, causing the carburetor to overflow. It could also be a clogged muffler. 2 stroke mufflers sometimes get clogged with oil. I haven’t experienced this myself, but have read numerous threads about it on this site. You might search the site for clogged muffler. Just some thoughts what you might check. nomo

You might also look at the crank seals. They seem to be a common problem on these older carts.

You might want to try switching the wires to the pulsar coil. I did the gm conversion and had them in wrong. I switched them and it was a whole new machine. Mine was doing exactly what it sounds like yours is.

Re: 86 2cycle ezgo!!!!!
my 86 was a dog too ,tried a bunch of things the best thing i did was bbq the muffler sounds strange but i gained 1300 rpm from that, pull out the 2 bolts holding it on and go for a rip with the muffler pulled away from the pipe a bit. if it runs better there you go 5 min test!
