Default Re: Gear Oil Question

I changed my rear axle oil last night on the G2.

When I drained it there wasn't much that came out. maybe 3oz-6oz of oil. I am sure it had never been check or changed.

When I removed the inspection bolt and started filling through the overflow vent tube hole I only got a less than a half quart in before it started to come out the inspection bolt hole. The manual says the capacity is .85 quarts. So I put the inspection bolt back in and filled with the .85 quart.

The cart has a 4 inch lift on it. Could this pitch the rear end so that the oil is at a differnet orientation to the inspection hole?
Did I do the right thing puting it the requested .85 quart? I just don't want to mess up the rear end cause I know how much they cost to replace.

Chevyman, I think you did the right thing. But keep an eye on it, being on an angle, it may try to throw gear oil out the breather hose, since you did put the .85 qt. in. So just don't be alarmed if you see oil on the drive way till you know where it came from. Good heads up thinking!! And your car looks good!

I have a 1999 G16-AT and am in the process of assembling all the tools and parts I need to change mine. The Owners Manual calls for 90W Gear Oil as well. I asked my local parts supplier and he said pretty much the same thing, use 80W-90. The 80 is for the Winter and allows the oil to run a bit more freely at a lower temperature. I would be more concerned with the specifications of the oil. You may not need the expense of the full synthetic. What year is it? Check with Yamaha (Yamaha Factory Service,1-866-747-4027, Service@yamahagolfcar.com). I’ll bet that a standard “conventional” type of oil will suit you just fine. Change oils when they get dirty. My cart doesn’t have a drain plug, so I must pry the differential cover off to drain. This means I must make my own gasket when I go to put everything back together. I contacted Permatex for a suggestion and the Rep told me to use a new product. Permatex Gear Oil RTV Sealant, Item #81182. This RTV is specially formulated for differentials and transfer cases. Check the internet and search “Changing Differential Oil”. This will give you a good idea of what you are looking at. My Service Manual advises there is a two stage torque process for putting the diff cover back on. Using a crisscross pattern, tighten a lower end screw to 14 ft-lb. Go directly across the cover to the opposite screw and torque it. Go back down to a screw next to the first one and torque it. Go directly opposite the second screw and torque that one. Continue this crisscross pattern for all ten (10) screws. Then go back and tighten, in the same crisscross pattern all screws to 18 ft-lb. One trick, leave a top screw in place, but loose. This will hold the diff cover in place when you use a putty knife to pry open the bottom of the diff cover to let the oil drain. This stops everything from falling into your drip pan.

Sounds complicated, but it’s really not. It’s a labor of love. Take your time and enjoy your efforts.
