Default Turn Off To Shift?

Good Afternoon,
First post, first golf cart to own.
I have kinda a hybrid cart but it does have the Club Car rear end, so I was hoping someone can shine a little light.

I have to shut the motor off to shift from forward to reverse, reverse to forward, etc. After I turn the motor off, it shifts fine. Start it back up and we are on the way. Is this a cable issue or something else?

Motor is a Briggs & Stratton 16hp.

Thanks

Since it's not the stock motor, it sounds like your cart is a key start and idles (like a car). These carts are designed to be pedal start, which means that whenever you let off the gas, the motor shuts off. So naturally, whenever I shift my gears, my cart motor is always shut off, which is part of normal operation. You may be able to drop your idle speed down, which may allow you to shift gears with an idling motor, but I'm not certain. You would for sure have to have a roller bearing in the middle of your drive clutch to keep the belt from grabbing during your idle. The stock Club Car drive clutches from 1988-up have the roller bearing. What kind of drive clutch do you have?

See my post #94 in the thread below. This member put a Briggs motor in his '86 Club Car and was having the same issue IIRC:

http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/lifte...ft-25s-10.html

I'm pretty sure he (Streetbu) ended up buying a stock 1988+ Club Car drive clutch to replace his older, non-bearing clutch and that may have fixed his issue. If you comment in that thread and ask him what he did I'm sure he can point you in the right direction.

I have to cut mine off also, unless I am rolling in the direction I want to shift my rear into.

Thank you all for responding.
Yes it is a button start and idle. Didn't think about technically most golf cart motors are off before shifting!

Will check on lowering the idle speed that is a good idea.

To me the belt looks pretty loose. I am used to a tight belt driven atv, so this belt in comparison looks way loose!

I will start reading that thread posted. 260+ posts might take a while!

Thanks for all the compliments. Added a led bar across the top. Pretty pumped about this Craigslist score.
