Default 99 EZGO has to rev before clutch engages

I have a 99 EZGO with the 295 engine. New cart to me. The engagement of the clutch isn't smooth. It revs then takes off with a jolt. The belt is good and I even tried the extra belt from my 2PG cart. It might be modified, it has a nice exhaust header and muffler.

Any thoughts as to what to look at? This would be in the drive clutch, correct?

Yes....Rebuild or replace the drive clutch.

I'm having this issue with the cart I just picked up. Mine has a comet clutch which I disassembled and cleaned with no better results. I'm just going to feather the throttle for now to avoid the jolt but it's looking to me (since mine is simply a spring, 2 plates and the centrifugal weights) like clutch replacement may be the only answer.

My ST 4x4 has same issue - mostly when cold.

If you rev cold in neutral and then allow to drop to idle you will hear the clutch drop out (with a clunk).

If you allow engine and tranny to warm up (patiently) and then very gently engage clutch (start at idle and creep up slowly) - you will likely notice the "clunk" at engagement is minimized - goofy but workable.
