Default G16 Crankshaft End Play

I am waiting on parts from Plowmans (primary clutch etc...) and noticed I have some end play in my crankshaft. I have not put an indicator on it yet but have looked and searched for the spec with no luck. Would someone be kind enough to post the end play spec? And also if out of spec what's the procedure to correct if not a new crank? Engine runs fine....

TIA,

Al

I have seen lots of variation on endplay without any reliability issues.

Dave,

So .05 mm is .0019''? Less than 2/1000''? I think I have a problem. I can indicate it this eve but just guessing I figure it about .030'' 30/1000'' Sorry for converting to inches I'm an old school machinist....Al

I think the manual converted it to .0020"

Yeah Dave, That would be correct. I think I have an issue. I'll put a dial indicator on it tonight just to know how bad it is. Whaaa....Whaaa....

Thanks for the info.... Al

If you really have a lot of crankshaft end play I would be real concerned about the play in the balance and camshafts. The camshaft just rides in bosses in the cases.

I measured it this eve and it is .019”. When my primary clutch and belt arrive, I’ll see how it runs. Just wondering what the fix would be? Is there a thrust bearing or is the crank worn?
Thanks for the replies....Al

There are no "selector shims" as far as I know, never seen any. Maybe if I remember, I'll measure the end play on a brand new cart, so you can see just how far out a brand new one is (and maybe not bother chasing your tail on something there is no "adjustment for"). The bearings live in the crankcase & cover, the crank slides in with no "shims", and there is no "thrust bearings" besides the ball bearings in the case. I ran into the same thing on gas axle input shafts, they are usually 4x more endplay specified in the book (but it does have selector shims).

Nothing fancy to see here, just mundane stuff like ball bearings and seals.

cgtech,

Thanks for the comment. I had so much vibration in my old primary that with it running the in neutral, I could see the clutch walking in and out. I'm hoping the new primary clutch will solve many of my issues. If not, I'll address them. As for end play on a new cart, it would be great to know that....

Thanks, Al
