Someone told me that with a decent set of batteries I should be able to get about 20-25 miles out of a charge. Is this correct?

On a stock cart that is reasonable.

Is that mileage basically draining the batteries to dead?

If a cart has gone a long distance and starts to noticeably loose speed it is considered dead. Knowing your actual pack voltage at all times will teach you what your cart can and cannot do.

To prevent premature pack death I would not let the pack get below 36.0 volts without a complete recharge.

I would say no problem. Range depends of many things, one of which is how many batteries are in the battery pack. I have two carts, both are 2002 Club Car DS series. One cart has 8-6 volt batteries and one which I just purchased has 6-8 volt batteries which are 3 years old. My numbers below were taken while driving on smooth roads and cart paths, no off road driving.

In a recent test I took the newly purchased cart with 6-8v (3 year old) batteries 26 miles. At the end of that test the voltage of the pack was just over 48 volts (50%).

Some time ago I took the other cart with 8-6 volt batteries over 50 miles with the end voltage being just over 48 volts.
