option for shorter belt
An option to a shorter belt or clutch machining is splitting the secondary and milling the stock shim. We take a piece of 16 ga. plate, using a hole saw the diameter of the plastic shim cut a hole. Clamp the plate to a steel bench or another plate, place shim in hole, sand shim to the thickness of plate. Reinstall shim, belt will now ride a 1/16 to 1/8" above the top of sheave. This mod will improve low end greatly and not affect top end performance. This also does not create additional stresses on the crank shaft and trans input shaft bearings. This also is a no cost mod that works with stock or big block engines. We keep the shims from worn out clutches to have extras for this purpose. You could also purchace some UHMW shaft to machine them out of.

Re: option for shorter belt
Thanks for the detailed instructions- I was wondering how a person could evenly sand the shim down- this sounds like a great method.

rvkersh,
What year is your cart? It would be good to know what models use the shim in the driven clutch. |

Re: option for shorter belt
May I add. After reading this I had a but load of arctic cat parts here. I opened up the secondary and measured up the deflection washer. Would you believe the arctic cat and polaris primary clutch glide washer are perfect. I used the .060 thou one and with the belt being warn a bit it was flush with the top of the secondary.
