'88 DS-brake operation question
Need to put new brake shoes on. Cart is on stands and driver side rear wheel is off. Remove rubber boot and back off adjuster, disconnect brake cable and remove Hub. For reference I actuate the cable arm on rear of backing plate to see (if and how)the shoes move. Only the rearmost shoe moves. The frontmost shoe only moves a tiny bit, maybe 1/64" or less. Barely discernible. I look at both shoes to gauge pad wear. Rearmost pad is worn at top and frontmost pad seems to not show any wear, compared to new shoe pad. I this normal? Uneven pad wear I can deal with. Frontmost shoe not moving any, if at all, is troublesome? Am I missing something? The cart always stopped correctly. Am I worrying about something that isn't an issue? Thanks.

Re: '88 DS-brake operation question
Well, Since the cart has always stopped correctly compared to other carts I have driven, I have deduced that the brakes operate correctly. I guess the rearmost shoe actuates first against the hub, then forces the frontmost shoe against the hub 2nd. This would account for the wear pattern I am seeing (and read about in another post from 2010) where rear shoe seems to wear faster than front shoe. I'll put it back together and verify operating smoothly. Thanks for the sounding board. Good carting.

Re: '88 DS-brake operation question
Sorry I didnt see this sooner! The patterns you're seeing and the actuation of the shoes you described is perfectly normal from what I have seen in my past experience. Since it stops normally I'd say you're definitely good to go.
