Re: Runs better in reverse than forward
Well i kept testing this cart and found the compression was higher in reverse than in forward, also when i watched the guage the pressure went from 110 to a 100 pretty quick and kept fallin.Si im guessing the crank seals are leaking...

Re: Runs better in reverse than forward
pull the muffler and check your compression. you should notice it dropps. spend the 20 bucks fpr new points and condensor. you can go to a yellow and blue auto store and ghet points and condensor. use a 70 chevy inline six. make sure you get the eighlin brand not the other ones. you will have to trim the tails of the condensor connector off and bend the electric connector when you get it in so it doesnt short out on the points cover plate. set the gap at .022 at tdc, then set the timing. to get to crank seals, fly wheel has to come off and air housing has to come off. with the filter being half full, its no biggy, my cc has a full tank and it never shows more then a half full filter.

I pulled muffler and I can blow air through it with compressor,I have brand new points and condenser, set timing again as per manual.Still it runs great in reverse but no power in forward...either needs seals or top end or maybe both

Re: Runs better in reverse than forward
run it with out the muffler. if it blocked up, a littler air compressor will co through the muffler. 2 cycles burn both oil and gass, and will over time plugg up with residue. there is a video on here showing and explaining how to bbq a muffler. basicly getting a nice bon fire going and throwing in your muffler till it shots out a blow fire stream, them allowing it to cook till the blue stream of fire quits. then allowing it to cool down after about 2 hours and knocking it on a hard surface a few times to knock the crap out. but be forwarned it might not work. i had one doing the same and the muffler was pluged, just got a new one for about 100 bucks. the sighn it was blocked for me was ran great while featehring the choke, only way to get and keep it running. it ran good till warmed up, then no power. got it home and accidently touched the muffler! ouch! i burned a set of mechanics gloves in the proccess. i pulled the muffler and ran.... ran like a raped ape with no problems other then the loud pipe! i had a pipe made for 6 bucks, and a u bolt to hold to the pipe. after all what harley do you know that runs on a muffler?
but the compression should be around 85-90. any thing high shows a restriction/blockage......muffler! as far as the fwd and reverse, i would say sheck your timing once again. twe explained to me many timmes till it finally clicked in my head that it runs cw in fwd and runs ccw in reverse, or vice versa. and timing is everything! i also had the heck of a time with timing, i had it set to points closed at the 25 degrees markes, and its oppisite! the need to be open at the 25 degrees. it was funny for a mechanic with 15 years experince getting something little and silly like that getting his arse handed to him over something so silly. im sure if graig or tew get on her they will prob tell you to check and verify timing and pull the muffler and run it with out it. or get compression check with out the muffler. if compression goes down.... new muffler! |

Re: Runs better in reverse than forward
that would prob be in the timing. it will actully run or start easier in reverse the foward as i recall.

Re: Runs better in reverse than forward
The timing is not correct. Time in forward and reverse. The compression difference is due to the fact that the engine will turn faster in reverse than in forward due to design definitions. And also is trying to indicate some ring wear.

Re: Runs better in reverse than forward
That or the gauge is not correct which today is very common!
