Default Must...Find...SPARK

'94 4 stroke medalist. removed motor to fix something internally and after reinstalling it i have no spark. I had spark before, now nothing. I replaced the ignition coil assuming it had failed but still no spark.

I just need to know what else to check before replacing more parts.

this thing is so close to running for the first time since ive had it (almost 10 months!!) !!

thanks in advance.

check voltage at the new coil igniter you install

with pedal pressed you should have 12vdc going to coil

if its jumping 3v 5v 4v

check pulsed connection
I had this problem

checked voltage and i get just shy of 12v when pedal is fully depressed. i was dumb and didnt realize you needed to ground the plug to metal to get the plug to spark. i can see spark but apparently it still isnt enough to get it to fire up. i can spray carb cleaner directly into the carb while cranking the motor and it still doesnt try to start.

where do i look next?

well theres gas flowing through the fuel line but im not sure if its as much as it should be. I tried priming it by using a shop vac to suck it through but it still doesnt seem like a lot.
the plugs are dry as a bone.

i removed it because it shattered a rod. it ran before i removed it but now it doesnt. Im guessing the spark is still too weak if it doesnt even start with shots of carb cleaner right?

the plugs are dry?????

thats a problem ..if no spark they should be wet!

are you sure your carb is ok! the float has gas ect...

when my carts dont fire...the plugs are always wet...

fuel pump? try using a gravity feed fuel from a bottle to the carb see what happens

carb cleaner not sure about that!

Are you sure everyhtning is in time when u replaced rod?????

You hit the nail on the head... it was the timing. the belt jumped several teeth after it was installed last time! I know my buddy put it on right because he even showed me how to tell if it was on properly (with the marks). it must have caught some slack and jumped when i was trying to crank the motor over.

It wasnt getting any fuel because it kept spitting fuel out of the carb instead of sucking it in. we re-adjusted the valves also in case one was sticking. After doing that and of course fixing the timing belt it fired right up!! thanks for your help Wide, definately steered me in the right direction!

oh and i was able to put the original ignition coil back on because it wasnt that it failed to produce spark, it was that i was dumb and didnt realize that the plugs needed to be grounded to produce the spark... wow i felt like a dummy when i found that out...
